The Effect Of Lighting on Your Health

When thinking about your home there is always the laundry list of things you have in mind. Weather that is changing out furniture, renovating your kitchen, or finally fixing up that one space that has been neglected for years. All of these are great things to do but can ultimately end up costing a lot in time and/ or money.

In my experience there is one step you can take that can make a world of difference and not break the bank in the process. The word of the day is lighting, and specifically we’re talking about the bulb rather than the fixture today.

I know it can feel overwhelming standing in the isle at Walmart trying to pick between 100 different options, nut there is a key thing to keep an eye out for. In my experience the biggest determinate of how lighting will make your space will ‘feel’ is the number of Kelvin.

Kelvin refers to the ‘tone’ of the light. The lower the Kelvin = the warmer the colour of the emitted light and vice versa. Many people don’t think it would make much of a difference in how they feel in their home but think about the bright white lights of a hospital in contrast top the warm mood lighting of a romantic restaurant. The light you choose will directly affect your mood and it is a huge trigger to your brain to indicate what is expected at that time.

This goes into biology and the circadian rhythm. Those cooler toned lights (higher Kelvin) mimic the effects on sunlight in your brain are great for any spaces such as an office or workshop where your brain is expected to be alert and performing. On the flip side of that, warm lights (lower Kelvin) are great for spaces such as your living room and bedroom- those warmer tones, more similar to a candle or sunset, which tell your brain that it’s okay to relax. This is crucial because having a having a high Kelvin bulb in your bedroom or living room can actually keep your mind running when it no longer needs to be. This can result in a higher level of anxiety, rumination, and restlessness. Those are all factors can effect your physical well being over time.

Disclaimer: I’m not implying that switching your light bulbs will fix any struggles with mental or physical health but it is a piece of the puzzle can can help create an environment more conducive to relaxation and mental peace.

So next time you’re in the lighting isle remember to think about the space you’re buying for and I guarantee you’ll notice a difference!
