Plants- and Their Role in Design
Of all the elements in design, plants remain my favourite.
There is something quietly remarkable about what a single well placed plant can do - it can shift the entire feeling of a room without moving a single piece of furniture.
This isn't only aesthetic preference. Human beings evolved alongside nature for hundreds of thousands of years, and our built environments have recently, and rather abruptly, stripped that away. It is encouraging to see biophilic design gaining real traction again over the past decade. The industry has responded to what we lost when we traded the natural world for concrete and synthetic materials and it is great to witness.
Beyond the effortless sense of calm and vitality that plants bring to a space, they carry a weight that extends far beyond interior walls. They are living contributors to the ecosystems we depend on. They serve as a reminder that good design should never exist in isolation from the world outside.
Wherever a project allows, I bring plants in. To me, they are what ultimately separates a house from a home.
